Lactation support: breast/chestfeeding class for doulas

Advanced Doula and Perinatal Professional Workshop

newborn baby latching

This workshop meets the breast/chestfeeding requirement for DONA International and other training organizations.

Both birth and postpartum doulas play a key role in helping families to meet their newborn feeding goals. After birth, breast/chestfeeding a newborn is the next big challenge for many new parents. Throw in some sleep deprivation, a mix of hormones and physical recovery, and at times the challenges may loom large.

As a first line resource, doulas are a source of both evidence-based information and support and appropriate referrals for their bodyfeeding clients. With support and education that starts during the prenatal relationship, birth doulas can offer lactation support immediately after the birth that can lay the foundation for establishing a successful breast/chestfeeding relationship even if circumstances require separation of the parent/baby dyad. Postpartum doulas start in the home in the early days when with lactation and listening skills that support the breast/chestfeeding relationship. Your knowledge of current best practices make you an invaluable resource for your doula clients.

Is this workshop a good fit for you?

You enjoy acquiring evidence based information and best practices through hands on activities rather than lecture and PowerPoint.

You want to connect with your community and have fun while increasing your knowledge of the doula’s role in breast/chestfeeding support.

You respect cultural differences around newborn feeding and support all types of families, including LGBTQIA+ and People of the Global Majority in your practice.

Staying within the doula’s standards of practice of your certifying organization is one of your core values.

You will learn:

  • Recognize the benefits of human milk and become familiar with bodyfeeding recommendations of global professional organizations.

  • Prepare your clients for bodyfeeding success at prenatal visits and support their lactation goals during postpartum visits.

  • Explore breast/chest anatomy, how milk is made, and the hormones of lactation.

  • Support the important “Golden Hour” for the parent/baby dyad.

  • Identify feeding and satiation cues that are common in the newborn and determine if baby is getting enough.

  • Recognize how to support a proper latch to facilitate milk transfer, feeding comfort and milk supply.

  • Model common feeding positions and support clients in their body mechanics during their feeding sessions.

  • List circumstances when pumping or hand expression would be appropriate both antenatally and after the baby has arrived.

  • Describe the impact of maternal diet on milk production, baby comfort and disposition.

  • Identify common lactation problems, hurdles and appropriate solutions.

  • Recognize lactation products available to and commonly used by your clients.

  • Support safe milk storage and bottle preparation of human milk along with current best practices for bottle feedings.

  • Describe current best practices on the introduction of solids, weaning and tandem nursing.

  • Collate a useful list of resources on topics applicable to your bodyfeeding clients.
