Lactation support: breast/chestfeeding class for doulas
Advanced Doula and Perinatal Professional Workshop
This workshop meets the breast/chestfeeding requirement for DONA International and other training organizations.
Both birth and postpartum doulas play a key role in helping families to meet their newborn feeding goals. After birth, breast/chestfeeding a newborn is the next big challenge for many new parents. Throw in some sleep deprivation, a mix of hormones and physical recovery, and at times the challenges may loom large.
As a first line resource, doulas are a source of both evidence-based information and support and appropriate referrals for their bodyfeeding clients. With support and education that starts during the prenatal relationship, birth doulas can offer lactation support immediately after the birth that can lay the foundation for establishing a successful breast/chestfeeding relationship even if circumstances require separation of the parent/baby dyad. Postpartum doulas start in the home in the early days when with lactation and listening skills that support the breast/chestfeeding relationship. Your knowledge of current best practices make you an invaluable resource for your doula clients.
